Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye and under the coordination of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the National Polar Science Program was published and entered into force in December 2017 within the scope of the Antarctic Scientific Research and Science Base Project.
Within the framework of the program, the National Polar Science Workshop is organized annually to evaluate the scientific projects and studies carried out by Turkish scientists in the polar regions, to discuss the results of scientific expeditions, and to address developments regarding priority research areas. In this context, the First and Second National Polar Science Workshops were hosted by Istanbul Technical University on April 12–13, 2017, and September 12–13, 2018, respectively. The Third National Polar Science Workshop was hosted by Middle East Technical University (METU) on September 5–6, 2019. The workshop was open to the participation of all scientists interested in taking part in national polar research and was held free of charge. A total of 203 participants from 64 institutions attended the event.
